This course is designed to provide graduate students with knowledge of evaluation studies and methods
employed in planning the proper function and character of transportation facilities, and of the broad
administrative policies such as transportation needs, finance, and economics that affect the planning, design,
and programming of transportation systems. The course contents give attention to the application of basic
techniques in engineering economic evaluation and the assessment of user and non-user impacts of
transportation improvements.

Este curso está diseñado para proveer conocimiento a estudiantes graduados acerca de los estudios y métodos
de evaluación usados en la planificación adecuada de la función y el carácter de instalaciones de transportación
y acerca de las políticas administrativas tales como la identificación de necesidades, el financiamiento y los
factores económicos que afectan la planificación, diseño y programación de los sistemas de transportación. El
contenido del curso está orientado hacia el uso de las técnicas básicas de evaluación económica en la
ingeniería y el avalúo de los impactos a los usuarios y no-usuarios de los proyectos de mejoras de
transportación.

The highway design process. Highway types, functional classification, conceptual or schematic design, typical sections, environmental considerations, ethical considerations, roadside design, geometric design, channelization, signing and pavement markings.  Traffic analysis, soil considerations, flexible pavement design, in-service pavement evaluation, rehabilitation techniques, highway safety, traffic control plan in temporary work zones, engineering economic analysis and project selection.

Introduction to the basic concepts of location and geometric design of highways and streets. Design and stakeout of simple, compound, and reverse circular horizontal curves, and spiral curves. Design and stationing of superelevation transition sections. Design of parabolic vertical curves and calculation of profile elevations. Analysis of earthwork operations of a highway construction project.
