Examine the structure, stratigraphy and evolution of the ocean basins and adjacent continental margins. Students should leave this course with a thorough understanding of the geology of ocean basins and of the many roles it plays in shaping the surface of our planet. We will discuss the challenges and rewards of oceanographic research. We will explore the origin and history of the ocean basins, the tectonic forces that shape them, and the rocks and minerals that make up the ocean floor. We will study the ocean's control of global and regional climate and how these changes are preserved trough geological processes.

Introducción a la morfología, estructura, estratigrafía, evolución de las cuencas oceanográficas y márgenes continentales adyacentes. Los conceptos de paleoceanografía, registro paleoclimático en sedimentos oceánicos y mediciones de cambios en el nivel del mar serán introducidos. Retos y recompensas de la investigación oceanográfica serán discutidos. Se discutirá el desarrollo de las cuencas oceanográficas basado en el concepto de placas tectónicas. Las rocas, minerales y sedimentos que forman el suelo marino serán estudiados. Los problemas ambientales y las estrategias de manejo asociadas al entorno marino que nos rodea (costas, arrecifes de coral, plataforma insular, etc.) serán discutidos.
