Survey of fundamental geologic principles applicable to the analysis and interpretation of stratified and sedimentary rocks, their content, formation, and evolution, including their relationship in space and time. The goal of this laboratory is to reinforce the theories and concepts learned in the lecture component of Sedimentary Environments and Lithogenesis (GEOL 4046). The laboratory work involves a hands-on approach to the study of sedimentology, with the intention of affording the student a greater understanding of the processes of sedimentation and lithogenesis in the field, and in the laboratory.

The course will focus on the principles of fundamental stratigraphy by analyzing and interpreting layered rocks, their fossils, and their relationship in time and space. The correlation of stratigraphic systems in selected regions with their geological environment will be studied to deduce their nature and formation.
