The purpose of the course is to help students
who are interested in environmental engineering to obtain fundamental concepts
in various branches of chemistry and to gain knowledge in the analysis of water
and wastewater. This course is divided into two parts. The first part covers the basic concepts of
environmental engineering chemistry from physical chemistry, organic chemistry,
equilibrium chemistry, colloid chemistry, and biochemistry. The second part
involves a laboratory, which focuses on quantitative, qualitative, and
instrumental methods for water and wastewater analysis of particular interest
to environmental engineering such as alkalinity, hardness, chlorine residuals,
BOD, COD, nitrogen, phosphorus, volatile acids, and gas analysis.
