Assignment 4

Completion requirements
Opened: Wednesday, 5 November 2014, 12:00 AM
Due: Wednesday, 26 November 2014, 11:55 PM

Assume that for the bending test it is assumed that the most extreme samples tested will be Guadua angustifolia of outer diameter 6 inches or Dendrocalamus giganteous of maximum outer diameter 8 inches.

For the following questions, assume that the culms tested are uniform in cross section over their length (in reality they are not).  Also assume that the standard 4-point bending test is used, with the belts located at the 1/3 points.

1.  Estimate the maximum applied load to rupture the culms.

2.  Propose a steel beam that is suitable for supporting the middle belts.

3.  What is the maximum deflection anticipated at rupture?
