Banco Popular rolls out new $2.8M campaign
(adapted from an article by Jose L. Carmona, Caribbean Business, 18 August 2011: 12.)
¶1Banco Popular has begun its newest advertising campaign, “Echa pa’ lante” (Keep Pushing Onward), a $2.8 million investment. The media campaign stars local legendary salsa band El Gran Combo and runs on television, radio, in print media, social networks, billboards and other alternate media.
¶2“Echa pa’ lante” is a movement that tries to motivate Puerto Ricans to fight for their dreams through education and hard work. We want them to see that these things bring satisfaction,” explained Mariel Arraiza, Banco Popular first vice president of marketing.El Gran Combo uses the original musical score of their famous 1980s hit, “No hago más ná” (I won’t do anything more), which is a song about a lazy person. However, now they sing a new version, called “Echa pa’ lante.” It is a way to create a more positive and optimistic message about work. The bank hopes it will become the most popular song on the local radio stations, Arraiza commented.
¶3 “We are part of the “Echa pa’ lante” movement. We are trying to attract the attention of the public by using a beloved band and a song that explains our message,” Arraiza said.“We want people to identify with it and see it as inspirational.”The movement will appear on tv and radio with experts like sociologists, economists, and local artists.
¶4The campaign is focused on three areas: optimism instead of pessimism, finding solutions instead of depending on others, and being open to change instead of resisting it.These issues are key for Puerto Rico’s evolutionary process.“We want people to use the examples as inspiration and place the island back on track for a better tomorrow,” Arraiza added.

Historic Turn
(adapted from an article by John Marino, Caribbean Business, 18 August 2011: 16)
¶1Department of Transportation & Public Works (DTOP) is making a change toward public transportation.Traditionally, highway projects have been 80% of the government’s transportation funding and 20% have been public transportation projects. The ratio now is exactly the opposite.Every state will be moving toward public transportation systems versus new highways, and that is exactly what Puerto Rico is doing.
¶2The national move is part of a broader effort by the U.S. and most countries around the world to slow down the greenhouse-gas emissions leading to rapid climate change on a global level. The ultimate goal is to reduce the use of automobiles – one of the biggest sources of climate change – and to increase the number of people using public transportation systems.Another goal is to encourage alternatives like walking, cycling, car sharing, carpooling and others.
¶3In Puerto Rico, the massive number of cars on the roads is creating lots of wasted time in traffic jams as well as climate change.Moving toward public transportation will reduce that time for hundreds of thousands of commuters during rush hour. The effort includes a new Bus Rapid Transport and a light-rail project in San Juan.
¶4Another major focus of the public transportation effort is the Tren Urbano in San Juan. When it cost $1.50 to take the train, 33,000 people used it each day.Now that the cost has been cut in half to $.75, use has increased to 45,000 people a day.The goal is to have 100,000 passengers each day.Today, 61% of riders are between 15 and 34 years old, and many of them are college students.
