The Mosquito (Adapted from an article by Andrew Spielman)

¶1 Mosquitoes are a danger to everybody in the world because they carry many diseases, such as yellow fever, malaria, and dengue. These diseases are caused by viruses that grow inside the mosquito’s body, and when a mosquito bites (pica) a victim, the virus enters the person’s blood. Many people think all mosquitoes bite and drink blood, but this is not true. Only female mosquitoes bite, and they eat blood when they are ready to reproduce because they want to obtain a lot of protein for their eggs, and they obtain protein from blood.

¶2 When a mosquito bites someone who has a virus in his or her blood, the mosquito passes this virus to the next person or persons she bites, so a virus can spread very quickly. Mosquitoes, especially the ones that bite humans, adapt well to different climates; in other words, they can live in many places. Nowadays, international travel is common, and international travelers infected with a virus often carry this virus from one country to another. As a result, disease can spread more easily than ever before.

¶3 One way to combat an epidemic is to control the population of mosquitoes. The population of mosquitoes can be controlled by limiting the places where water accumulates because these are the places where female mosquitoes leave their eggs. Therefore, people should always cover receptacles that contain water, such as tanks and buckets. Even though it isn’t possible to eliminate mosquitoes completely, we can prevent diseases by controlling the population of these potentially dangerous insects. We have to learn to live with mosquitoes, and each person has a responsibility to avoid creating places where mosquitoes can lay their eggs.

Reading # 2 Same Movie, Different Name (In Quest, Introduction pp. 83-87)
¶ 1 People around the world enjoy movies from other countries. Movies from England, The United States, France, and Japan are especially popular. However, to sell a movie in a foreign country, movie studies often get a local company (in the foreign country) to give the movie a new title. Sometimes the local company translates the title of the movie for the new country. Sometimes the company creates a completely new title. It is often a challenge to choose the title. Let’s look at some examples.
¶ 2 Often the new title of the movie is identical to the original one. An example is the American film Along Came Polly. In Germany, the title was Und dann kam Polly, a direct translation. However, sometimes the movie makers do not translate original titles directly. Instead, they make changes that “sound” good in the foreign language. For example, the American Movie You’ve Got Mail was Yu gatto meru in Japan. The new spelling of the words shows how the English title sounds to Japanese ears.
¶ 3 Sometimes movie titles are completely different in anther country. When the local companies change a title, they often try to communicate the main idea of the movie. For instance, in Japan, Out of Africa became The End of Love and Sorrow, and in China, 101 Dalmatians was Big March of 101 Doggies. In France, Legally Blond was A Blonde’s Revenge. This title clearly communicates the main idea of the movie. Sometimes local companies make mistakes. For example, the plot of the movie As Good as It Gets was about a romance between a writer and a waitress. In Japan, it became A Romance Novel Writer. (The mistake? The hero did not write romance novels.) In Taiwan, Deep Impact, a movie about an asteroid (a medium-sized rocky object) hitting Earth, was A Planet Will Hit the Earth. (The mistake? A planet is not the same as an asteroid.) In these cases, the original title means one thing. The new title means something else.
¶ 4 Sometimes there is no translation of a foreign movie title. For example, the Mexican movie Amores Perros and the Japanese movie Tampopo both kept their original titles in the United States. Sometimes the original title sounds good to foreign ears. The foreign name might help to sell the movie because it makes the movie sound more interesting.
