Practice in the various forms of expository writing. Detailed class criticism of diction, phrasing, and sentence structure. A final research paper is required. This introductory course engages students in the creation of non-fiction and academic texts, and guides them through the theory and practice of writing in different genres and for different audiences. The course includes not only lecture discussion and class activities, but also peer critique of students’ writing. The reading and critical analysis of selected genres plays an important role in familiarizing students with the structures, devices, and conventions of each genre, which in turn provides a model for peer critique. The reading and analysis of selected non-fiction works also provides a model for student writing.
